BITTER
It’s the traditional way of drinking mate, without adding sugar, so that the yerba mate is brewed only with hot water. For the advocates of traditions, this is the most genuine way of drinking mate. However, in the case of foreigners or children who have just started to drink mate, it’s not the most recommendable.
SWEET
In this case, each time you pour water into the mate, you add a teaspoon of sugar, honey or sweetener (it should be added on the side of the bombilla so that the mate does not become washed out). In provinces such as Entre Ríos and Santiago del Estero, this is the typical way of brewing but also preferred, so that children can drink the mate too.
WITH MILK
You pour hot milk instead of water. This variation may also include adding sugar. Its flavor is very similar to the mate in a teabag, known as ‘mate cocido’.
WITH TEA
This is very common in the province of Entre Ríos, where it’s usually prepared with black tea that it’s poured into a cup just like with the mate (in this case, the temperature of the water must be higher since it’s tea). You can also add sugar, herbs or even orange peel.
TERERÉ
It is an exquisite cold drink, ideal for summer. The tereré, often drunk in the Littoral region when the heat is smothering, is prepared with yerba mate and very cold water or citrus fruits, such as grapefruit, orange or lemon. Then, you add ice and you may also add herbs according to the preference of each person.
IN THE GRAPEFRUIT
In this case, the mate is replaced by a hollow grapefruit. The citrus flavors of the grapefruit are the perfect complement to the yerba mate.
WITH ORANGE
The yerba mate with orange is one of the most traditional customs when drinking mate. You simply add some pieces of orange peel and enjoy your mate in a different way.
WITH COFFEE
Another classic combination is the yerba mate with a teaspoon of ground coffee. It’s an energy drink, ideal to start the day with all the power you need.
WITH LEMON
Mixing citrus with yerba mate is one of the best combinations. It’s always an interesting option, because the sourness of the lemon peel blends wonderfully with the flavor of the mate.
WITH HERBS
You can also add herbs to the yerba mate and mix them. The type of herbs you choose will depend on the taste of each person. Sage, lemon verbena, mint, boldo, carqueja, anise, linden, chamomile and peperina are only some of the possible herbs you can use. First, pour the yerba inside the mate, grind the leaves of the herbs with your hands and add them to the mate. Then, cover the mouth of the mate and shake it slowly. By doing so, the herbs will blend with the yerba and any accumulated dust will be eliminated.
MATE WITH A DROP
It’s an old custom to face the cold of winter days. You add a small shot of an alcoholic beverage so that the dry yerba gets wet, and, later on, you add a few extra shots as the round follows.
WITH HONEY AND LEMON VERBENA
Ideal for those who have a sweet tooth and don’t like the initial bitterness of the mate. It consists of adding a teaspoon of honey to the water and a few leaves of lemon verbena to the yerba.

«Mate lavado»
Cara de mate lavado: en referencia a una actitud un poco apática o pasiva de una persona. Ya que el mate lavado implica poco entusiasmo en el ritual y cierta desidia por ofrecer lo mejor que se tiene.
“Gracias”
Decir gracias en la ronda de mate es señal clara de estar satisfecho, si decís gracias y no te dan más mate, no te sorprendas, ya que en la jerga matera significa que ya no quieres más. Un mensaje para el cebador.
«Estar cebado»
Utilizada para referirse a cuando alguien tiene demasiado entusiasmo con algún asunto o persona. Estoy “cebado” con tal o cual cuestión.
Sobre el ruido en el último sorbo
Hacer ruido con el último sorbo del mate es necesario, es un sonido que da cuenta de que ya no queda agua en el mate. De todos modos, tampoco hay que exagerar.
“Calentás la pava pero no te tomás el mate”
Expresión popular que se utiliza cuando alguien seduce a una persona, en general del sexo opuesto, para luego no concretar o prestarle más interés.
“Caliente como una pava”
Expresión utilizada para referirse a alguien que está muy enojado.
Darle un sorbo al mate cuando te lo dan vacío y vos no estás cebando
Cuando sucede esto, dale un sorbo, es para la buena suerte.
“Más viejo que el agujero del mate”
En referencia a la gran cantidad de tiempo que tiene un tema o cuestión.
«Yerba no hay»
Frase con connotaciones de tipo sexual, que no deja alternativa: “¿Tomamos mate o tenemos sexo? Yerba no hay.”
«Puentear»
Saltearse a alguien en la ronda de mate puede ser considerado como un desprecio.
“Curar el mate”
Dejar preparado el mate con la yerba húmeda y durante dos días antes de su primer uso.
“Dar vuelta la yerba”
Pasar la yerba seca de arriba, hacia abajo.
“Mate llorón”
Es el mate con exceso de agua.
«Con bombilla hacia atrás, pa’ que no volvás»
Expresión gauchesca. Ofrecer un mate con la bombilla apuntando «hacia atrás» puede ser tomado como un gesto de rechazo. (La bombilla en dirección opuesta a quien va a recibir ese mate)
«Dormir el mate»
Cuando alguien retiene por un tiempo relativamente prolongado el mate antes de entregarlo a la persona que esta cebando.
«Usar el mate de micrófono»
Se utiliza cuando alguien tiene el mate en su poder y no para de hablar, olvidándose del resto, que también quieren tomar mate.
